Rhode Island Chapter Outings

About the Outings

Once a month, the Rhode Island Sierra Club puts together a traditional local, family friendly, and fun filled outing to the great outdoors. On these day trips, activities can include hiking in the state's beautiful parks, picnicking in historic town centers, and kayaking on the pristine watersheds around the Narragansett Bay. Please join us for one of these upcoming adventures. See you there!

Outings are open to club members, guests, & anyone else interested in getting outside.

We suggest a $3 members/$5 nonmenbers donation to help support the RI Sierra Club outings. Please contact Outings Leader Ben Jones with any questions or suggestions (outings@risierraclub.org or 401-598-6639).

Civic Outings Program

In addition to our traditional outings, the Chapter has received funding from the Rhode Island Foundation to conduct an innovative outings program designed to provide members and nonmembers with hands-on opportunities to build the skills, knowledge and experience it takes to effect policy change. The program will involve a variety of outings including:

Statehouse Outings to inform participants about administrative processes and encourage
public participation;
YouTube Outings to educate residents about videography and the power of social media in
modern activism;
Road Audit Outings to educate residents about current road conditions and potential
improvements available through better transportation planning;
Outings with Words to share readings in nature and invite participation in outdoor writing
workshops;
Urban Outings to give underserved and at-risk populations in Rhode Island access to nature;
Outings in Time to educate residents about the geological, ecological, and cultural history of
Rhode Island’s unique environment;
Off Your Feet Outings to demonstrate the simplicity and benefits of alternative forms of
transportation like bicycling and boating; and
Service Outings to enhance and maintain trails and conserved properties.

Upcoming Outings:

Sunday, April 28, 2013, 9 a.m. to Noon - Blackstone River Bikeway Cleanup

  • ***UPDATE***
    The April 20 Bikeway Clean Up Outing has been rescheduled to April 28 from 9-12 due to rain.
    ***END UPDATE***
  • The Blackstone River Valley and its bikeway are two of Rhode Island's scenic gems. Help keep them looking their best by joining the RI Sierra Club for an Earth Day Cleanup Outing along the river in Lincoln. We will be cleaning up the area surrounding the Kelly House in partnership with Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful. Trash bags and gloves will be provided, so all that is required of you is some energy and a good attitude. Don't forget to pack sunscreen, and bug spray. Bike shorts optional.
  • Meet at the RI Sierra Club office (42 Rice Street, Providence) at 8:30 a.m. to caravan, or meet onsite at the State Park parking area near the Kelly House (just beyond 1010 Lower River Road, Lincoln, RI) at 9:00 a.m. The clean up will end at 12pm.
 Saturday, May 11, 2013, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. - Vernal Pools at the Great Swamp
  • The Great Swamp Management Area in West Kingston is a densely vegetated and diverse place to hike. Last year we saw iris, orchids, and a variety of ferns while walking out to the vernal pools. Vernal pools are seasonal ponds that develop during the wet months of spring. They act as fragile and important habitat for many animals including frogs, turtles, and salamanders. See them before they dry up for the year by joining us on this outing!
  • Meet at the RI Sierra Club office (42 Rice Street, Providence) at 9 a.m. to caravan or at 10 a.m. at the Great Swamp at 277 Great Neck Road, W. Kingston RI. Drive past the compound at 277 until you reach the parking lot at the end of the road. Please bring your binoculars since there will be some great birdwatching opportunities. You may also want to bring bug repellant.  Pack a lunch, we will stop to eat along the trail.
Saturday, June 22, 2013, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. - Steppingstone Falls Hike and Swim
  • The outings club is heading to West Greenwhich to enjoy a day of hiking and swimming at Stepstone Falls. In addition to a beautiful trail that follows the wild Wood River, there are also good frog and crayfish sighting opportunities at the falls. We will spend about an hour hiking to the falls, an hour at the falls, and an hour hiking back. Remember to bring your bathing suit and bug spray. Also feel free to bring a bagged lunch to eat while at the falls.
  • We will carpool from the Sierra Club office parking lot (42 Rice Street, Providence) at 9 a.m.. Plan on being back in Providenec at 2 p.m.
  • Here are some directions if you are planning on meeting us there. Be at the trailhead around 10 a.m.:
  • Trailhead via Escoheag Hill Road: || Take exit 5a from 95S onto 102S, Victory Highway towards Exeter. || Turn Right onto 3S, Nooseneck Rd. ||From the junction of Rt. 3 and Rt. 165 in Exeter, drive west on Rt. 165 for about 5.5 miles. || Turn right onto the paved Escoheag Hill Road. || After 1 mile, turn right onto the unmarked gravel Plain Road (or Austin Farm Road depending on your map). There are actually two rights here and either one will do - the first one simply leads through a parking area next to an abandoned park building before hooking up with the second right that is the actual road. Both the rights look more like driveways than roads - if you see Old Voluntown Road on your left, then you have gone just a tad too far. || Once on Austin Farm Road, pass through a gate and travel 1.1 miles from Escoheag Hill Road, bearing left through a junction. || There will be a small parking area on the left just before a bridge crossing Falls River.
